The Need!
There has been a need for a Zone Website such as this for many years. It is to be somewhere to focus and display all things associated with the various Zone competitions and activities that take place throughout the year.
Back in 2002 I created a Coulter Shield Hockey League Website with the blessing of the then Zone Secretary, the late Herb Eleison. Through this Website I documented the Coulter Shield Hockey League (open competition) of 2002. Remnants of that original attempt can be found at www.sqhockey.org.au/02/ It's worth a look just to read some of the match reports and the names contained therein. The site design looks quite dated now of course as the Web has changed a lot since then. While some external links may no longer be current my "Macromedia Flash" menu at the top still works though! (a little boasting, sorry!)
While my 2002 efforts were well received by most at the time, I was not encouraged to continue the following year. However, in 2006 I became motivated to do something once again. In October 2006 I submitted a proposal for consideration at the Zone AGM. My proposal was to create a Website for the Zone, both Coulter Shield and Southern Cross. The proposal was accepted and here we are!
The Aim!
This 2007 Website has been constructed with the following in mind:
- simplicity - straight forward menus with few graphics and/or effects
- provision for the hockey basics - team lists, draws, results and points tables
- provision for host centre personnel to gain access for "live" updating
- showcase some of our past in addition to our present
- keep our participants, officials and supporters fully informed
While the Website delivers on these at present, it will hopefully deliver more information and features over time. Please let me know what you think via the Zone Guestbook.
Some Technical Stuff
The site is hosted by ByteSite - the Hockey friendly ISP. If any club or centre would like to create a new or transfer an existing Website to ByteSite then contact Alwyn on 1300 732 708 - tell him you are from Hockey and that Kim sent you!
The system and applications used are ALL Open Source. The operating system of the PC I use to create and edit this Website is a distibution of Linux called Kubuntu (www.kubuntu.org/) - and not MS Windows!
Here is a short list of most of the applications I use:
- Firefox Web browser (www.mozilla.org/products/) to online access the Content Management System (CMS) to edit and update the site
- gFTP - to upload the CMS and do the occasional online editing (www.gftp.org/)
- Kate - for plain text viewing and editing (kate.kde.org/)
- Nvu - to create the occasional html page (www.nvu.com/)
- OpenOffice.org - to create and convert content (www.openoffice.org/)
- Krita (www.koffice.org/krita/) and the GIMP (www.gimp.org/) - to create and edit the occasional graphic
- Frozen Bubble - for when I'm bored. Btw I have managed to get through all 100 levels! (www.frozen-bubble.org/)
All of this software is free and fully legal. Some applications have versions for MSWindows available also.
Don't forget to post your comments regarding this Website on the Zone Guestbook!
Cheers,
Kim Rendell
